What to Expect

The Faroes is one of those places where the more work you put in, the bigger the rewards. This promises to be one amazing tour. During our time on the Faroes, sunrise will be around 6am and sunset around 9pm, This means with sunrise and sunset so early and late there will be plenty of time for shooting but also plenty of downtime too. I will be at Vagar Airport for 4pm on April 14th. Please arrive no later than 5pm on the 14th. The workshop will end at midday on the 18th of April. I will be arriving to the Faroe Islands on the 13th and staying in Hotel Vagar, beside the airpoprt. Should the weather allow, we will shoot sunrise on our final morning.

We will be spending our entire stay in a large 6 bedroom house, this means each person will have their own room. This house is located between Vagar and Thorshavn and central to all amazing locations. Bed linen and towels are provided in the house.

There is one short ferry journey on this trip to the Island of Kalsoy to shoot Kallur lighthouse, which is included in the price.

There will be NO SET itinerary for this trip as I prefer to keep a close eye on weather forecasts throughout the tour to determine our destination and make sure we have the best possible weather that may suit a specific place. Having been to the Faroes many times I find keeping things flexible is the best option and gives us the best chance of being in the right place at the right time.

Please Note: There is a chance that accommodation may change from the 6 bedroom house to single occupancy hotel stay. This will be confirmed in May 2021 and there will be no extra charge. Please also note that should this trip not go ahead due to Covid19, you will be issued with an online voucher for the full amount paid, including deposit for you to use on any future workshop or tour.

Transportation

You will be transported throughout the tour in a comfortable, spacious 9 seater bus starting and finishing at Vágar airport.

Please be at Vágar airport no later than 5pm on April 29th.

The tour will end at midday on April 18th when we arrive back to Vágar airport.

Weather

The weather in the Faroes in April can be anything from mild, calm weather to cold, snowy weather, so prep is key! Shooting in the Faroe Islands can be very tough as it is prone to strong winds and sideways rain. Given the challenges of shooting here, it is definitely the most enjoyable place I have ever shot. Warm clothes and waterproofs are a must here, as temperatures can drop suddenly when the sun goes down. Should we get any nights of clear skies, I will be keeping close tabs on the solar activity for potential shooting of the Northern Lights.

Locations

Gasadalur
Drangarnir Arch
(90 minutes hike each way in windy weather, if the weather is favourable we will be brought out on a boat and collected)

Trælanípan
(40 minute easy walk each way)
Witches Finger
Fossá
Tjørnuvik
Funningur (20 minutes hike)
Kallur Lighthouse (30 mins easy hike)

Also some absolute personal favourites I have found while I was there…

Fitness level
This trip requires a decent level of fitness, a couple of locations on this tour requires a 60-90 minutes walk/hike along flat ground with little incline.

Learnings

You will learn about shooting in manual mode, slow shutter speed, ISO settings, Aperture priority, the use of filters, why the polariser filter is so important and learning to get the best compositions (thinking outside the box)

You will also learn the use of sunrise, sunset & astro planning apps.

Equipment

You will need a DSLR with manual mode, a sturdy tripod, grad, polariser & ND filters.

I would strongly recommend a wide angle and zoom lens (24-105 and/or 70-200) lens for this workshop.

Full frame Wide Angle: 12-24mm or 16-35mm etc…

Crop sensor Wide Angle: 10-20mm or 11-16mm etc…

You will also need good walking shoes, wellies, warm clothes, waterproof clothes and a shower cap (to put over camera in rain)

If you need some loan filters for the workshop please let me know well in advance of the trip here
