What to Expect

March 1st-3 rd
We will spend seven nights working our way from West to East Iceland. Firstly, we will spend two nights in the town of Grundarfjördur, on a lovely self cartering cottage on a farm right beside the famous Kirkjufell mountain. The town itself has a great supermarket where we can buy our food during our stay and make our food in the cottage.

March 3rd-5th
The next two nights will be spent close to the town of Vík on the South coast. There are so many places to shoot around here, especially popular spots but also plenty of lesser known spots too. This will be self catering and the house is cosy with all the mod cons.

March 5th-7th
We will spend the next two nights in a guesthouse in the town of Hofn, on the South East of Iceland, right beside the iconic Vestrahorn mountain and more! Hofn has some really nice restaurants for eating out in the evenings also.

March 7th-8th
On our last night, we will make our way back to the accommodation at Vík to spend one night there before making our way to the airport on the morning of the 16th of March.

All accommodations have us well placed to shoot the Northern Lights in some iconic locations.

Each accommodation has three rooms, three for single occupancy and one for sharing with myself (male only), except for our accommodation in Hofn, each person will have their own room for two nights.

I will arrive to Keflavik Airport at 2pm on March 1st, Please arrive no later than 3pm. We will be back at Keflavik airport at 6am on March 8th.

There will be NO SET itinerary for this trip as I prefer to keep a close eye on weather forecasts throughout the tour to determine our destination and make sure we have the best possible weather that may suit a specific place. In my experience of spending time in Iceland, we always took it one day at a time as we were keeping tabs on the weather forecast and it worked a treat. We got some great conditions including amazing sunrises and sunsets most days aswell as amazing nights of jaw dropping northern light displays.

My Outbound Flight

My Inbound Flight

Keflavik to Dublin

Flights will be released in the coming months

For maximum comfort both at the accommodations and in the 9 seater, I have limited this tour to just four people.

We will use a large  9 seater 4×4 as our means of transport throughout the tour. Given this tour is restricted to just four people, we will have amazing comfort throughout the tour.

We will start and finish the tour at Keflavik airport.

The weather on Iceland can have anything from crazy snow and ice, to mild, pleasant conditions in March. Iceland is also prone to the odd storm, so strong winds can also be expected. These winds can create amazing scenes to photograph. From my eleven previous trip to Iceland, we got the most amazing light during the day and then to top it all off, most nights we were out shooting the Northern lights with some EPIC displays. It is very possible we will experience some clear night skies so there is a great chance of Northern lights with some amazing foreground interest. This promises to be an amazing week of photography in a truly picture perfect part of the world. We hope to see you there…

Also some amazing, lesser known personal favourites I have found while I was there…

You will learn about shooting in manual mode, slow shutter speed, ISO settings, Aperture priority, the use of filters, why the polariser filter is so important and learning to get the best compositions (thinking outside the box)

You will also learn the use of sunrise, sunset & astro planning apps.

You will need a DSLR with manual mode, a sturdy tripod, grad, polariser & ND filters.

I would strongly recommend a wide angle, f2.8 at least and a zoom lens (24-105 and/or 70-200) lens for this workshop.

Full frame Wide Angle: 12-24mm or 16-35mm etc…

Crop sensor Wide Angle: 10-20mm or 11-16mm etc…

You will also need good walking shoes, cheap crampons,  wellies, warm clothes, waterproof clothes and a shower cap (to put over camera in rain)

If you need some loan filters for the workshop please let me know well in advance of the trip here
