What to Expect

This 5 night workshop will literally be a paradise under the stars! This is an ideal trip to mix a bit of sun and stars. La Palma is a small, hard to reach Island off the coast of Tenerife and is part of the Canary Islands. It is one of the best places in the world for stargazing and astrophotography. La Palma also has the biggest observatory in the Northern Hemisphere.

La Palmas skies during summer months are almost guaranteed to be clear, although on low ground there tends to be low cloud, onve we make our way to the mountains we will get above the cloud to crystal clear skies. Access to the mountains is easy with the car and walking to the locations can vary from just 5 minutes to 30 minutes. The paths are easy followed with very little incline.

The plan will be to shoot in the mountains four out of the five nights with one night spent at the villa where seeing the Milky Way is just as good as from the mountains. I would highly recommend a midnight swim under the stars. La Palma really is a paradise under the stars.

The Villa is also very close to a nearby town with plenty of restaurants and supermarkets. We will have plenty of time to relax during the day although one or two afternoons we will spend time scouting in the mountains for our milky way compositions.

This workshop is limited to just 3 people to ensure maximum space and comfort both in the villa, bus and while out photographing.

Please note: Should Covid19 prevent us from running this workshop, we will reschedule or you will be issued with an online voucher for the full amount paid, including deposit to use on any future tour or workshop.

The Villa

Our accommodation for this entire workshop will be a remote, private villa just 30 minutes from the main area to photograph the stars. The villa consists of 2 rooms and sofa bed. Room 1 is a double room for single occupancy or couple sharing, room 2 is a twin room with two single beds for sharing. The twin room will be male/male or female/female sharing only, unless two people booked as friends. There is also a comfy double sofa bed in the dining room. I will use this unless anyone decides they want it when we get to the villa. the cost of the sofa bed is €100 extra on top of shared occupancy price.

The villa is very spacious with two big bathrooms, lots of cooking facilities, washing facilities and storage etc. Inside is beautiful but outside is where it shines brightest. The property is huge and we have our very own private, heated infinity pool 1,000m up overlooking the Atlantic Ocean.

Learnings & Weather

You will learn everything that will help seriously improve your astro photography like manual focusing in the dark, setting up your equipment in the dark, take multiple images to stack for noise reduction purposes, long exposure foreground images and even using a star tracker.

You will also learn the use astro planning apps to help you plan your own astro adventures in the future. With plenty of down time during the day we will also be able to work on some post processing. If you don’t want to bring your own laptop, I will have mine

Weather in La Palma during the summer months is beautiful with temperatures generally in the mid 20s. Although there can be plenty of low cloud around we can easily get above that cloud once we drive up to a height of 2,500m in the mountains. Clear skies at night are pretty much guaranteed. At night the temperatures can drop down to the mid-high teens.

You will need a DSLR with manual mode, a sturdy tripod, grad, polariser & ND filters.

I would strongly recommend a wide angle lens with minimum an aperture of 2.8 or less and zoom lens (24-105 and/or 70-200) lens for this workshop.

Full frame Wide Angle: 12-24mm or 16-35mm etc…

Crop sensor Wide Angle: 10-20mm or 11-16mm etc…

You will also need good walking shoes, warm clothes and thermals because nights under the stars can get cold when your standing around.
