What to Expect

The Faroes is one of those places where the more work you put in, the bigger the rewards. This promises to be one amazing tour. During our time on the Faroes, sunrise will be around 6.30am and sunset around 9pm, This means with sunrise and sunset so early and late there will be plenty of time for shooting but also plenty of downtime too. I will be at Vagar Airport from 2pm on April 4th. Please be at Vagar airport no later than 3pm. The workshop will end at midday on the 8th of April.

We will be spending our entire stay in an Airbnb on the island of Vagar, the best island of them all in my opinion. The house is perfectly positioned to get us to all places in good time but also to react quickly to some of the most famous spots on the Faroe Islands if the conditions look promising all of a sudden. We will also have our own rooms in the house so no room sharing. This workshop is limited to just 3 participants.

There is one short ferry journey on this trip to the Island of Kalsoy to shoot Kallur lighthouse. This trip will be weather dependent but will be high on our priority list of places to shoot.

There will be NO SET itinerary for this trip as I prefer to keep a close eye on weather forecasts throughout the tour to determine our destination and make sure we have the best possible weather that may suit a specific place. Having been to the Faroes many times I find keeping things flexible is the best option and gives us the best chance of being in the right place at the right time.

A non refundable deposit of €400 will be required to secure your place on this trip. Remaining balance must be paid no later than 5 weeks prior to the trip..

Transportation

You will be transported throughout the tour in a spacious estate car starting and finishing at Vágar airport.

Please be at Vágar airport no later than 3pm on April 4th.

The tour will end at midday on April 8th when we arrive back to Vágar airport.

Weather

The weather in the Faroes in April can be anything from mild, calm weather to cold, snowy weather, so prep is key! Shooting in the Faroe Islands can be very tough as it is prone to strong winds and sideways rain. Given the challenges of shooting here, it is definitely the most enjoyable place I have ever shot. Warm clothes and waterproofs are a must here, as temperatures can drop suddenly when the sun goes down. Should we get any nights of clear skies, I will be keeping close tabs on the solar activity for potential shooting of the Northern Lights.

Locations

Gasadalur
Drangarnir Arch
(90 minutes hike each way in windy weather, if the weather is favourable we will be brought out on a boat and collected)

Trælanípan
(45 minute easy walk each way)
Witches Finger
Fossá
Tjørnuvik
Funningur (20 minutes steep hike)
Kallur Lighthouse (30 mins easy/moderate hike)

Fitness level
This trip requires a decent level of fitness, a couple of locations on this tour requires a 60-90 minutes walk/hike along flat ground with little incline.

Learnings

You will learn about shooting in manual mode, slow shutter speed, ISO settings, Aperture priority, the use of filters, why the polariser filter is so important and learning to get the best compositions (thinking outside the box)
